The Royal Penguin's Points of View

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

These wonderfully goofy looking penguins (look at those yellow feathers on top of its head) live in the waters around the Antarctic, on a narrow island called Macquarie Island (20 miles long and 3 miles wide) south of New Zealand, north of Antarctic.

The penguins are endemic to this island.

Interestingly, Macquarie Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you look up the island and the wildlife on it you will understand why. What a treasure trove this island is - the penguin species that live on the island are amazing: Gentoo penguins (we have written about these beautiful, gorgeous, funny birds), Royal penguins, East Rockhopper penguins. Then of course, there are the albatross: Sooty albatross and Wandering albatross.

If you type in Royal Penguins into a Google and look up the images, you will see a bunch of really cute faces with the resplendent yellow plumes on their head. I promise you will want to take a comb to it. Makes them look like a rock star too with an attitude to go with it.

Strange that all the penguins have a white and black body but then have a bright splash of color on either their face, beak, feet, or body - Gentoo (orange-yellow beak and feet), Royal (orange-yellow plumes), King (orange-yellow chest, under beak, and side of head), Macaroni (orange-yellow beak), Emperor(yellow side of head). Just an observation.

A cheery royal penguin, whose name was Ian, was talking to his grouchy friend, Heathcliff.

"Not sure why, but I'm extra happy today," Ian said. "The day is bright, the sun is golden. What seemed bleak and cloudy yesterday, feels clear and sunny today. I'm feeling life in a whole new way. I'm happy, sleepy, warm, and sunny. Eh, Heathcliff? What do you think?"

"Move the feathers out of your eyes, for god's sakes, Ian!" his friend Heathcliff said.

"Oh?" Ian said. "Is that what it is? My feathers? That is causing my sunny view?"

"Yes," Heathcliff said, irritated. "Every time the wind blows your feathers over your eyes, you go all gooey on me. You need to face the wind. It keeps the yellow feathers off your eyes."

"Face the wind?" Ian said, troubled. "I hate the wind."

"You'll see clearly."

"No!" Ian said, stoutly, after thinking for a moment. "I prefer my fuzzy sunny view."
