Orchid Mantis: Never Go By Looks Alone.
Updated: Aug 10, 2020
ME: Calm down. Calm down. I'm sorry. I honestly thought you were called an 'orchid' mantis, because you looked like an orchid, camouflaged like an orchid, and hid in an orchid.
ORCHID MANTIS: YOU THOUGHT WRONG!
ME: Hey. Your colors are white and pink, and you shimmer and glow like a flower. Even your legs are like flowers! You legs ARE pink petals! Take a look at yourself. You're like an orchid. Why LOOK like an orchid if you are not going to HIDE in an orchid?
ORCHID MANTIS: OH, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, WE DO NOT HIDE! NOT IN ORCHIDS! NOT IN ANY OTHER FLOWER! WHY SHOULD WE HIDE? WE NEVER HIDE! WE ARE FAR PRETTIER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN ANY FLOWER!
ME: Says who?
ORCHID MANTIS: Millions of flies, bugs, and insects.
ME: Nonsense. Flowers are nectar for them. You're doom and death.
ORCHID MANTIS: Tell that to the bugs. They don't stop to examine. If we are on a branch or a leaf, insects zoom toward us, not the real flowers. They think we are full of nectar and they think that because we're prettier. See? They go by looks alone! We eat the stupid ones, who make the mistake. What would you like us to do? Hold up a sign? "Excuse me. Please don't come near us no matter how gorgeous we look - it won't be a pleasant experience for you."
ME: Ugh. Okay. So. You LOOK like a flower. But you don't necessarily HIDE in flowers.
ORCHID MANTIS: Exactly. We provide a completely different experience.
